The Clothes We Wear
Staying on top of fashion trends can be stressful, on our sanity, our health, and our planet! From the stress of fitting in to the simple, yet stressful task of getting dressed in the morning, the clothes we wear seem to be causing a lot of headaches! We’ve put together some useful information, tips, and ideas for you to take home into your closet, in hopes of relieving some of this stress.
- Lea outlines the true cost of fast-fashion and provides useful solutions to help ease the problem, in her blog: Fighting Fast Fashion.
- April shows us how we can create stylish and creative “capsule” wardrobes, to both reduce consumption and stress, while looking your best, in her blog: A Capsule Wardrobe.

Plastic-Free Spotlight: The Dandelion Cafe
A cafe that truly embodies the essence of its namesake; a bright, colourful disruption within the monotone shades of the norm. Much like the rogue, little yellow flower, this cafe is a bit different and unexpected, popping up in our backyard, packed with a wealth of unexpected healthy goodness.
Recap: Jeff Kirschner in Calgary
On October 16, 2018, Plastic-Free YYC had the pleasure of welcoming Jeff Kirschner, founder of Litterati, for a special presentation in YYC. Litterati is an app that helps collect data on litter that individuals pick up, and crowd-sources cleaning our environment – but it is so much more than that. The power of Litterati is the community behind it; it compiles enormous amounts of branded and geo-referenced data which helps identify the sources of the problem fast. Ultimately, the more data we have on litter, the better our decision-making is because solutions can be based on facts.
Jeff’s presentation was inspirational and captivating. His journey of creating Litterati is humbling and really showed us that if you are passionate about something then to go for it! He provided examples of where Litterati has directly impacted policy, such as in San Francisco: the app quantified how much litter was just cigarettes, which justified an increased sales tax on cigarettes which in turn generates millions of dollars for cleaning city streets. Things we discussed included how to tell a story and speak from the heart and what motivates people to make changes in their lives.
We are so grateful to our sponsor the Dandelion Cafe, which is Calgary’s newest vegan, low waste cafe. They worked hard to get Jeff to Calgary and we are such a fan of their business (and the food and drinks)!
Recap: Bea Johnson – Zero Waste Lifestyle
We had the pleasure of meeting Bea Johnson on Saturday, October 27, 2018! Over two sessions, she inspired over 200 Calgarians to reduce waste by leading a zero waste lifestyle. Her quirky, fun presentation about her own zero-waste journey, with her family of four, truly resonated with the listeners. She was a delight to hear speak and she truly showcased how do-able a zero-waste/low-waste lifestyle can be achieved.
We were pleased to be there to engage with the audience before and after the sessions, providing Calgarians guidance on their ZW journeys, on a local level. By taking the first few steps to lead a plastic-free lifestyle, we can all strive to move closer to creating a zero-waste home, like Bea’s.
Thank you to The Apothecary for bringing Bea Johnson to our city!
