PLASTIC-free holiday tips
The holidays are about getting together and spending time with loved ones, but more often than not, these festive get-together can create a lot of garbage. Did you know that during and after the holiday season there is a 50 to 75 per cent increase in the amount of material received at Calgary’s waste and recycling facilities? That’s well over 100 truckloads a day. To help you reduce your waste over the holidays, have created some new, unique and creative tips:

Plastic-free YYC helped run a clothing swap at the Women’s Center on November 21, 2018. We first talked about what PFYYC does in Calgary and what impacts a clothing swap can have. Calgarians, identifying as women, came with bags of clothing they were ready to part with, sorted them, and ‘shopped’ around for new items. People brought everything from accessories like scarves and hats to sweaters, jackets, children’s clothing, and dresses. It was lots of fun to try on clothing, model new outfits, and get advice from strangers who quickly bonded over re-purposed clothing.
WHAT: A clothing swap! Bring old or un-used clothing items and swap them for others.
WHO: Plastic-Free YYC, the Women’s Center, and women of Calgary from all types of backgrounds
WHY: The global fashion industry is worth billions of dollars, but is also one of the biggest contributors to pollution and users of our natural resources. Canadians are one of the largest per capita producers of waste – and a lot of that waste (81 pounds/year on average) is from textiles! We should be re-purposing and using clothing and textiles already produced, rather than buying new clothing and using it for a season or two.
HOW: clothing swaps can be held by anyone – try it next time you get together with your friends or family! All you need is a little bit of space and some imagination. There is nothing better than seeing something you used to love get re-used and loved again!
