Did you know that approximately one million plastic bags are being used every minute around the world? Because of this, more than 100,000 marine creatures die every year from plastic entanglement. At Borsa, we aim to raise awareness about the effects of single-use plastics and provide an innovative product to reduce the waste created by single-use plastics.
Borsa is a student-led Junior Achievement Company based in Calgary, Alberta. Junior Achievement Company Program allows students across the city to develop entrepreneurial, collaboration and leadership skills. Students meet once a week for 18 weeks to learn how to start and run their own business.
Our products are created with single-use plastics through a method called plastic fusion. Plastics like plastic bags, bubble wrap, garbage bags, fruit wrappings, and glitter are fused together to create a unique fabric. The fabric is then stitched into our various products such as lunch bags, wallets, folders and tote bags. Our bags are reusable, washable and customizable.
Borsa’s vision stemmed from our value of promoting sustainability. We wanted to create a distinctive product from recycled materials that were accessible and abundant. Our Vice President of production, Jonathan Raphael, came up with the idea and created prototypes. Since then, our team members have been actively working to produce and market our products. Twenty-five-percent of our profits will be donated to Plastic-Free YYC as an organization that strongly aligns with our mission. Another 25-percent of our profits will be donated to Junior Achievement to continue this phenomenal program.
Although it has only been a couple months since the start of our endeavours, our team is filled with intelligent and passionate members. We hope to better our community and positively impact the environment.
